fucking necro thread unholy, but i have nothing else to do and it's been a terrible day. i love movies with a strong sense of psychological horror and terror, and these often stretch the bounds of what many die-hard purists would be comfortable referring to as "horror". so fucking what. :-) here I go: (and that was a line from lifeforce)
The Unholy: supberb acting, and the sequence where the priest is falling thru hell, hallucinating the various horrors the demons wish to visit upon him--it still makes me shiver. Earlier in the film when he picks up the phone and receives a call from a fellow murdered priest who is in hell, who proceeds to tell the priest that he will be waiting for him there, that's another chiller. And finally , the young lady in the mental ward reliving horrific sexual abuse at the hands of her father while the priest watches helplessly was SUPERBLY acted, and as a fellow victim of horrors i can't post here, i can assure you that the scene will stay with you long after the film is over. And plus the main evil demon bitch is jaw-droppingly beautiful, with a face and figure that must be seen to be believed.
Prince Of Darkness: solid acting, awesome setting, apocalyptic story, ultra-creepy, terrifying atmosphere. The future humans beaming warnings of the future into the characters minds while they sleep that they hope are just nightmares gives me chills every time. "This is NOT a dream. We are sending signals directly into your subconscious. Our current technology does not allow us to reach you through the interference of your waking mind. This is not a dream. We are from the year XXXX. this is not a dream. We are showing you events of what will happen in the future. This is not a dream."
Brain Dead: say what you will, Bill Pullman is a solid actor, and this movie is a relentless mindfuck, where his character is relentlessly tortured--torture that happens in his mind. You must watch this.
The Serpent And The Rainbow: stark, apocalyptic, hopeless, grim, superbly acted, wonderfully filmed, ultra-creepy effects and hallucination sequences. Snuck into the theater the day it came out with a friend.
Jacob's Ladder: same as above, but even more sad, morose and hopeless. Psychological horror unparalleled. You truly feel sorry for the living hell this guy forces himself to endure. Harrowing.
Videodrome: this one needs no explanation, embodies all the previous qualities of the aforementioned films. Horrific, hallucigenic perfection.
The House Where Evil Dwells: hopeless and grim atmosphere, profoundly sad in it's own way, and utterly vicious in it's evil of the characters.
An American Werewolf In London: a fucking masterpiece on every conceivable level. The finest werewolf film ever made bar none, even to this day.
Scalps: low budget, but creepy and evil as hell. One of the more disturbing decapitation scenes at the end. More hopeless grimness and evil. Does what few no-budget horror films can. Also, a unsettling throat-slitting scene where a guy goes insane and chases down and brutally murders his girlfriend.
Donnie Darko: if this isn't a top-tier example of a perfect, despairing psychological horror story i don't know what is. Heart wrenching in it's own way, big time disturbing and eerie as hell. Perfect acting, unique story. Drew Barrymore screams, "FUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!!!", and it's strangely erotic.
Dracula (Browning, Lugosi): perfect, creepy atmosphere and acting that is effective to this day.
Jaws: if you need this one 'splained to ya, kill yourself. the reason we have "shark week" on discovery channel. listening to the kid screaming under water as he's being eaten alive by a massive great white is truly horrific. an icon.
A Nightmare On Elm Street: a masterpiece, perfect in every possible and conceivable way. Will eventually tell of a wonderful childhood experience in '88 when i met Mr. Englund on the set of "Freddy's Nightmares" selling candy, and he and the crew bought everything in my box and that of the other kid i was selling with. um, guess that's the story. This film achieves what others only can aspire to. Created another icon, unparalleled perhaps even by Jaws. Freddy Krueger became an American icon of horror, and may well remain unmatched by any other single horror character in years to come. If you're a fan, you own......THE GLOVE!!!!
In The Mouth Of Madness: one of the finest psychological, nightmarish, Lovecraftian movies of all time, truly without peer. So goddamned disturbing and horrific, you'll be shattin' yourself nightly with awful dreams. When Styles contorts and crab-walks out of the car, WHOA HORSIE!!! creepy as hell!!!
The Exorcist: the uncut version. Pure fucking nightmare fuel. Another horrific crab-walking sequence that will make you spontaneously go pee-pee.
Warlock: just a damned fine horror flick, a great ride. Damned epic and fun.
Pet Semetary: everything a great horror film should be. Creepy, well acted and shot, atmospheric, other-worldly. Incredibly disturbing. "First, I played with Judd, then I played with mommy.....Now I wanna play with yeeeew!!!" AAA+
Bloodfeast: horrifying masterpiece, totally over-the-top. Brutal as fuck.
Salem's Lot: most terrifying vampire film ever. Mr. Barlow wants to eat your children while you watch!!!
Blade: more action than horror, but one of my favorite movies and characters, beautifully shot, so whatever.
Phantasm: HOE....LEE....FUCK, this will cause more uncontrolled wee-wee'ing!!! Angus Scrimm will scare the shit out of you just by standing there....
Poltergeist: if this doesn't scare the unholy doo-doo out of yoo-yoo, you're probably already ded-ded. Like the ghosts in the film. They're ded-ded, but feisty enough to be able to make you ded-ded. Fun-fun. Too bad the cute little girl actually passed away in real life. Some people will still refuse to watch this film to this day, which is a huge endorsement for a PG horror film.
er, maybe i'm hoggin' the fun. someone help out here...........
