@marc: John Christ released a solo album in 1999 that is just kind of 'meh.' Straightforward hard rock, but a Danzig-ish riff pops up every so often. Present day he works in Hollywood in the stunt industry.

Slash, man I wanted to put him on the list too. That November Rain solo is still one of my all time favorite music video moments.. EPIC. (haha! He didn't have his guitar plugged into anything though, so he probably sounded like a music box in real life. "plink, plink, tink, plink, tink, tink")
I'm glad Ghoat put some Skynard (they rock) on his list makes me feel better about my off the wall choices. I would also like to put anyone from the Crossroads music fest on my list, anyone but John Mayer. After all, Blues is the seed from which the Rock tree springs, and the Metal fruit grows.

I would have to say... (in no particular order)
Trey Azagthoth Chuck Schuldiner (RIP) Euronymous (RIP) Jon Levassuer Pat O'Brian/Rob Barrett

No order:
Greg Mackintosh (Paradise Lost) Trey Azagthoth (Morbid Angel) Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) Dave Chandler (Saint Vitus) JK Broadrick (Godflesh/Jesu etc)
Runners up:
James Murphy Chuck Schuldiner Rick Rozz Kerry King Hetfield (pre-Black album)
I look more for recognizable and original guitarists rather than technically skilled yet run-of-the-mill players. That's just me. For example Dave Chandler probably never hit a note in key in his lifetime but if I hear it I know its him instantly. Same with Greg from Paradise Lost.

Yeh, Im not much on robot players either. It's got to be original and memorable! To many players are just repeating the same neo-classical scales and sweeps over and over and it gets fucking boring!!Like Chuck and Trey for example, you can easily recognize them when you hear it . Yet they have completely different styles and very original styles!!Skill means nothing when you memic everyone!

Although, these guys definitely need to make the list as well. These ones probably write better riffs than the previous ones on my other list
Pat O'Brien Jack Owen Robert Vigna (Underrated as fuck) Terrance Hobbs John McEntee Ralph Santolla

Great choices Mal!! I think Danny Coralles and Eric Cutler from Autopsy are very underated because of the time they did what they did!! Brutal catchy and sick!!!
