For those of you who do not know all the genres of metal or the history of metal.... too bad. The differences between the sub-genres take forever to explain and the history is VERY VERY debatable. For all intents and purposes its usually said that it started with the big 3. BLACK SABBATH LED ZEPPELIN DEEP PURPLE (yes even this is controversial, but it's a good start for a newbie)
The "Tree of Metal" has many branches and many roots, but those three are definitely in the trunk. Metal's roots go way back into Blues... or even further.
Here's a quick video I found that might help you understand what some of the guys on here are talking about.

Awesome charvel in the video!! The first good guitar I had was a old charvel with the guitar shaped logo!! I totally agree with the big 3, but for me as a kid 8,9 years old Black sabbath, Quite Riot, Motley Crue, are a few of the bands that attracted me into metal and beyond!! Randy Rhoads and Eddie Van Halen are the guys who made me want to start playing! Although I ventured on a way heavier and darker path!!!!
